The text of appearances / asfaBBQ 2019
The workshop The "Text of Appearances" participates in asfaBBQ 2019 with an event that will take place on 16th September 2019 at 19:00 in the former library of Athens School of Fine Arts.

The text of appearances is an ongoing project that highlights the use of text in visual arts and the reciprocality between different artistic practices. It is organised by the visual artists Dimitris Rentoumis and Maria Glyka with the collaboration of studio11asfa.

During spring 2019, the workshop was launched with the participation of an energetic group of ASFA students. The students unite one more time for the occasion of the ASFA BBQ 2019 and welcome you to a pop-up experimental show. Τhe participants stay close to the spirit of the workshop and share with the public the formation of a snap group exhibition. They have the intention to invest in unpredictability by questioning the fixed position of the exhibited works in the given space by means of movement and through language. This event overlooks the distinctions between finalised work and research in process, image and text, spectator and creator and delineates a non-hierarchical curatorial approach. Moreover, the floor of the former library becomes a field of action where everyone is invited to move freely through a transforming continuity οf space while at the same time active participation of the visitors is encouraged. The former library will function as a living lab for diving into the research of the artists by engaging in collective reading, being vocal, moving around and the ability to contribute to the exhibition as a whole.

Schedule:
The event will take place from 19:00 to 22:00 and will revolve around three main actions.

Εxhibition making // Join the process of building up the group show

Group reading // Participate in the reading of texts by the participating artists commenting on a spectrum of subjects such as politics, identity or confessional poetry (with the addition of excerpts from the texts Europe and its Others by Boris Groys and The emancipated spectator by Jacques Rancière)

Floor plan // Rethink and redefine the exhibitional space by using manual and digital tools.

Participants:

Erifili, Stathis Chalkias, Evi Charalampopoulou, Christos Fousekis, Katerina Ioannou, Kosmas Kosmopoulos, Kleopatra Moursela, Kiriaki Osogia, Georgia Panagiotou, Catherine Pataka, Anna Samara, Savvas Tsimouris, Tania Varveri, Jimmys Efthimiou

*The workshop the "Text of Appearances", which draws its title and inspiration from John Berger, is researching the use of text in visual arts in relation to coexistence in a group. It emphasizes in the engagement of diverse elements in order to construct a continuous context where narratives interact with each other and eventually merge together. In that way, it is attempted the formation of a wider collective narrative as a process of transliterating the dynamic cohabitation of different practices inside the common space of an art studio. By taking into consideration aspects of language in visual arts with open conversations, exercises and in situ presentations, we examine text and its variants (such as storytelling or poetic speech) either as parallel paths or as inherent elements to the artistic process.*

Organised by Maria Glyka and Dimitris Rentoumis
