As part of the 5th edition of asfaBBQ “The Social Contract & its Discontents” we would like to invite all the participating artists, collectives, art-spaces, venues and galleries as well as other collective or individual art projects in Athens to discuss about the state of affairs in the local scene and the different strategies of making (our?) artistic production sustainable. The notion of ethics is placed in the center of this exchange, both as a normative category of how things should work, but also as descriptive idea of the established state of affairs. Questions of the numeration of work in the sector – both recognized contributions but also what falls under the radar (dark matter?) – would be addressed first challenging the prevailing ethos of unpaid work that defines the cultural sector in Athens. At the same time the limits and the conditions of working together, of participating and initiating collective projects, like asfaBBQ will be also discussed.
